The Sri Lanka Navy arrested 30 fishermen for the illegal harvesting of sea cucumbers between the Chundikulam and Vettalakerni sea area today.
2,264 sea cucumbers, 102 oxygen cylinders, 25 diving masks, 22 pairs of diving fins and 10 GPS units were taken into custody. Those arrested and the seized items were handed over to the Inspectorate of Fisheries in Jaffna for investigations.
On the same day, naval troops attached to Naval Sub Unit in the Batticaloa Fort of the Eastern Naval Command apprehended two other local fishermen engaged in fishing using banned fishing nets in the Periyauppodai sea area.
The two were handed over to the Police in Batticaloa for investigation.
