Govt acting against constitution: Gammanpila

Parliamentarian and Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader Udaya Gammanpila yesterday alleged that the government was blatantly acting in violation of the constitution. Addressing a press conference at his party office in Pitakotte, Gammanpila said that according to reliable information he has received, a decision had been made to appoint a Judge without experience in the initial courts to the Judicial Services Commission.

The appointment letter would be readied by Friday, he said.

Gammanpila said he would request President Maithripala Sirisena to prevent this appointment which would openly violate the Clauses of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

He also wished to remind the Speaker, Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader who are members of the Constitutional Council that diabolical violation of the Constitution was gist for a no-confidence motion.

He said during several SLFP press conferences, he had been accused of making a statement against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the effect that the “door to the cave had been laid bare.” Gammanpila said he wished to reiterate that he had never made such a statement.

He said Europe was laying stringent conditions to grant us the GSP Plus facility.

In the past the country made good progress without the GSP Plus, he said.
