President recalls days as Dinamina correspondent

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday recalled his days as a correspondent for the Dinamina newspapers saying this was an index how far a journalist travel can
aspire to. “I started my journey as a regional correspondent for the Dinamina Newspaper of the Lake House Group during the era of the 1970-77 United Front Government. I gained a good exposure in the media field while working as a newspaper correspondent for Dinamina for three years. Therefore, I consider it as a pride for all journalists as they could rejoice while looking back at how far a journalist had travel up the ladder to the position to the President of Sri Lanka,” he said.
He made this observation at an event organised by the University Mass Communication Teachers’ Association (UMTA) at the Library Services and Documentation Board to commemorate World Media Freedom Day yesterday.
“The present government is a government that will go to any length to protect media freedom and I who once was a journalist will take every possible measure to assure media freedom,” the President added.
The UMTA presented the President with a set of proposals on World Media Freedom Day with the objective of creating a healthy media culture in Sri Lanka.
