Panadura HC passes death sentence on five

Panadura Provincial High Court Judge Wikum Kaluarchchi passed the death sentence on the five accused found guilty of kidnapping, murder and attempted murder of three other injured persons. The second accused B. Surangith Peris was acquitted.

The accused sentenced to death on May 3 were T. Lalith Silva,N.A. Nihal Asanka Malsiri Silva, Mahawaduge Manjula Kumara, N.A. Kapila Chandrasiri Silva and B Sumanasiri Periris of Lunawa, Moratuwa.

In this case they were indicted by the Attorney General with being members of an unlawfull assembly and kidnapping of Roy Pradeep Kumara and Lidedrmulage Chula de Silva and for the murder of Chula de Silva on January 7, 2002 and for the assault of three others and causing injuries and attempted murder.

The judge passing the death sentence on each of the five accusded said the indictments against them had been proved beyond reasonable doubt and this was a well organised murder and kidnapping. State Counsel Aparna Hadurugoda said the court must mete out deterrent punishment to the accused found guilty of the indictments filed against them as they have been found guilty of the respective indictments.
