Mulleriyawa mental patients for SAITM final-year ‘activities’: GMOA

The Government Medical Officers’ Association has learned of plans to move a number of in-house mental patients from the Mulleriyawa Hospital to the Malabe private medical faculty, for final-year examination related ‘activities’, GMOA Secretary Dr. Nalinda Herath said.
Dr. Herath said the consent of the patients is to be obtained by promising to pay them for the ‘trip’.
Since this is a grave violation of the law and patients’ rights the GMOA intends to inform the Health Ministry and the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) and ask them to hold an inquiry, the doctor said.
Several state hospitals today have organised protests against this for 12.00 noon today.
No difficulties will be caused to the patients, the doctor assured.
The government should immediately take over SAITM and upgrade its standards, he added.
